It's not a problem that could be fixed simply by stopping the practice of allowing people to work in this country illegally.BeFrankhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11814239467355086230noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7012911.post-1093646822974155992004-08-27T15:47:00.000-07:002004-08-27T15:47:00.000-07:00I think you are absolutely right, by leaving water...I think you are absolutely right, by leaving water out in the desert it's helping people to break the law. If we would stop providing the illegal immigrants all the health benifit, free education, free social secuirty, free water, maybe THEN they will stop coming over here illegally. Yeah, I said THEM. It's 'them' against 'us' the way I look at it. America is being invaded by illegal immigrants, and the politicians for whatever reason "especially republicans" cater to Vincente Fox like we are his personal bitch. What a shame.JC714https://www.blogger.com/profile/09735966116581430563noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7012911.post-1093324169532702682004-08-23T22:09:00.000-07:002004-08-23T22:09:00.000-07:00I'd rather see our elected officials err on the si...I'd rather see our elected officials err on the side of compassion in issues like this. But the answer to your question (had it been asked) might have been interesting.Elizabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00362450139300363320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7012911.post-1093235915463698142004-08-22T21:38:00.000-07:002004-08-22T21:38:00.000-07:00I live in a very agricultural area populated with ...I live in a very agricultural area populated with a majority of immigrants, many illegal. Many of the aliens from Mexico are making the choice to cross the desert in the night, after paying someone every cent they have or have ever had, because they were told they would be picked up on the other side of the border and taken to safety. To a new world. A new life. They discover too late, and often with several young children in tow, that the disgusting excuse for a human (sorry, my own editorial here) who took their money, isn't waiting for them on the "other side." Now they are in the middle of nowhere, dragging their kids, with no ride to rescue them on the other side. Do they turn and go home or go forward? Forward is hope, back is nothing. No water in either direction but wouldn't you rather die from thirst heading towards freedom than turning back to the horror you know? Hopeless. Now broke, failed, fallen.

Unless some good, kind hearted souls put aside what's legal and decide that too many people, including innocent children, have died needlessly because of the greed of some disgusting pig they trusted who ended up taking their life savings and then lied to them and left them in the desert to die.

I have mixed feelings about illegal immigrants. I live in a neighborhood where probably out of 100 homes there are maybe 10 "white" occupied and owned homes. I've heard stories from my neighbor, Vietnamese, of crossing the border in the night, bare feet - one mother with 6 children. Her husband a college professor against communism was murdered. They shot him in the head in front of his kids with a warning to her to change what she believes, or be next. So Mom gets a courage I have nothing in my life to relate to, and one night decides that's it, we're going for freedom. She whispers and motions for her kids to follow her, no questions, no talk, babies who somehow know not to make a cry or sound in the night and if they do are stiffled with a hand; she makes sure they follow her, walking precisely in her footprints because of hidden land mines. They walked only at night for weeks. Kids, cold, hot, wet, sick, tired. Some die on the way. Whatever life they had was so bad it made walking through waist high mud in the dark, carrying her baby over her head, with the threat of constant death, worth it. A life so horrible that every step in the night imagining the next step could blow you and or your children to kingdom come, worth it.

They finally get to a rescue mission who put them on an airplane to Ohio. Why Ohio? Why not I guess. (I thought it was funny when they told me that. I don't know why but it just strikes me as weird that we rescued them from the tropical jungle and dropped them, in the dead of winter, in Ohio!) They arrive in Ohio, in mid-winter, with absolutely nothing. So, the oldest daughter who was 18 then and is now 40, learned English on her own, learned business, opened two donut shops. Worked hard. Three years ago, bought a $350,000. home with three generations and sisters, brothers and their wives and children, all living in one home. It's hard for me to look at that and say you can't have what I have for no other reason than I was fortunate enough to be born here. Luck of the draw I guess.

Yes, I complain. Illegal immigrants here often don't have insurance. (See that big dent in my car? Insurance-less illegal immigrant) Sometimes it pisses me off in my day to day goings, but when I think about what I really know of the sitation I've gotta say, there but for the grace of God. I'm a lucky sucker. I just happened to be born in the right place and fortunately so were my kids.Terrihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03468282100176801806noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7012911.post-1093234086572669342004-08-22T21:08:00.000-07:002004-08-22T21:08:00.000-07:00Oops! I'm just looking at the potential for there to be better news coverage. It just seems that our elected officials might want to mention the crime even as they're organizing aid for the criminals. I think from a journalistic view, we have a responsibility to point this out.

I'm late for work. In this case, I don't know if the larger issues were considered. When I was sent out on it, I got the impression it was more of a disaster relief effort. It didn't occur to me that there was anything more that could have been said about it until I started to blog it this morning. There are always a lot of smaller stories that don't air because of breaking news. Sometimes they can be aired later and sometimes they can't.BeFrankhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11814239467355086230noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7012911.post-1093107612624685362004-08-21T10:00:00.000-07:002004-08-21T10:00:00.000-07:00Wow- That was a quick response. I think my impression probably over-simplifies what is really too complex of an issue to point the finger at our elected officials. I've gotten the "politically correct" explanation, but I know there's a straight answer out there. People might just not want to hear it.BeFrankhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11814239467355086230noreply@blogger.com
