Watch Your Back.

Even brave people don't sit around in South Los Angeles without a good reason.  So, you must understand that's why I'm scratching my head.  I'm working with reporter  Serene Branson and we're covering a shooting that happened over the weekend.  A man shot and killed a father and his son on 73rd Street near the corner of Central.

We visited that area earlier, but we're doing our live shots from the 77th Division Police Station.  Here we sit waiting for our next live hit.

Without a doubt, the loss of life is horrible.  A family has lost two members and there's very likely no motivation for their death.

That kind of thing happens too often in this area.

I understand why we're here.  It's our job, but that doesn't mean I'm eager to be here.

I'm not a fearful person, but every time someone walks past the van, I'm on edge.  It's bad enough when that someone is walking past on the sidewalk.  Twice now, someone has walked around from the street side of the van.

I'm not jumping out of my seat or anything, but it's difficult not to notice.

For the most part I'm just going with the flow and believing strongly that there's no reason for anyone to take a shot at us.  Still, it's freaking me out a little.

You know I believe, it's not a safe world.  You can easily be killed in your home, in your classroom, or at your job.  Probably more likely, if your job takes you to South Los Angeles at night.

I hate to sound so down about it, but it's difficult to find a positive spin when I'm still looking over my shoulder.

  1. I know how you feel. When I have to go into a suspect area, I make sure there are police vehicles there.

Usually if not then their locator video is going to be a reader.
